Northland lights up

Northland shopping centre has created its very own Northland Lights, an interactive display that mimics the aurora borealis.

To celebrate the launch of its $15 million redevelopment, the Northland Lights allows customers the chance to test their creativity skills.

The interactive campaign, produced by the digital firm tkm9, uses smartphone technology that allows shoppers to develop their own version of the Northern Lights straight from their phone.

Imagine using your phone to add splashes of colour, create gorgeous swirls or even add snow in real-time to the Northland Lights on the outside of the building.

Have others admire your work and bask in the pleasure your imagination creates.

Only at Symmetry in Motion, a Melbourne art installation, has this technology been seen before, although not with the Northern Lights imitation.

The Northland Lights provides consumers with a rich, interactive experience through social and mobile experiences, according to Mark Hodgens, CEO of tkm9.

“We noticed a gap in the market where consumers wanted a much deeper and connected interaction within retail and digital signage, so we partnered with market leaders Microsoft, Intel, Vodafone and NetComm to deliver that,” Hodgens said.

Next time you’re around the shopping centre, located in Preston, Victoria, have a go at creating your own version of the Northern Lights.

Hurry though, as they're only on until February, 2014.
