The communications and media regulator has released a video to educate consumers on how to avoid “bill shock” under the new International Mobile Roaming standard.
The YouTube video introduces imaginary characters Edward and Patrice whose overseas adventures were soured by the unexpected costs of their offshore calls and texts.
The video runs viewers through the new standard, which came into effect on September 27 this year, and the new rules that are yet to be initiated.
Tips dished out by the Australian Communications and Media Authority include unlocking your phone and purchasing an overseas SIM card, talking to your telco and using free wifi.
Under the new standard mobile phone providers must inform their customers via SMS that they are roaming when overseas.
Optus, Telstra and Vodafone customers will also be provided with an SMS informing them how much the roaming will cost and how to opt out.
