To mark its 80th anniversary, Boral, the only fully Australian-owned and largest construction materials supplier in the country, has partnered with Sydney independent agency and production company 3rdspace to launch a campaign that celebrates the impact it has had on the lives of Australians.
With a workforce of over 7,500 employees and contractors, Boral has been instrumental in building modern Australia, supplying materials for iconic projects including Parliament House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Hume Highway, Snowy Hydro, and the Sydney Metro. However, for this milestone, the company sought to avoid a traditional “chest-beating” corporate montage.
Instead, the new film turns the spotlight on the audience: everyday Australians whose lives are improved by the hospitals, roads, new homes, and infrastructure that Boral helps to create. The campaign highlights pride in the company’s 80-year legacy while signalling a clear ambition for a sustainable future.
Aligned to Boral’s commitment to sustainability, 3rdspace committed to a highly sustainable production model. The film was shot using recycled wardrobes from the creative team and solar-powered batteries for all gear. To further minimize the carbon footprint, all locations were selected within a 5-kilometer radius of one another.
The production drew heavily on local talent. It was directed and edited by Rhys Day, with Jack Saltmira as DOP. The emotional score was composed by Luna Pan, known for her work on feature films and the official soundtrack for the 2025 New Year’s Eve fireworks.
The script called for an 80-year-old couple and their grandchild, and after the first round of auditions 3rdspace ECD Rickie Marsden suggested casting the daughter of 3rdspace founder Rob Logan which led to casting her real-life grandparents in the lead roles.
Despite having no acting experience, director Rhys Day and the crew were able to use their expertise to capture their natural interactions in a park setting to authentically ground the story.
“To capture 80 years of history is no small feat, but the 3rdspace team created magic. We are incredibly proud of this campaign; it celebrates our past and future in a way that feels genuine and new, humanising what Boral has done for generations of Australians in shaping the built environment. At life’s milestone moments, our solutions and products are all around,” said Ben Wyld, head of brand, communications and marketing at Boral.
When asked for comment on seeing his family on screen, 3rdspace Founder Rob Logan simply smiled as a proud dad as he watched his daughter on screen.
Rickie Marsden, the ECD of 3rdspace said “You’re probably standing on something by Boral without even knowing it. Eighty years is a huge achievement, the challenge we had as a team was to connect to the emotion of that. The answer was simple, film the life that happens on top of it. It takes confidence for a company as big as Boral to speak that softly, and we have Ben and the team to thank for allowing us to do just that.”
