HELP! I just want to hear other people’s genuine experiences and opinions that I can trust
Yeah, I hear you and know exactly what you mean. Here are all my 50 recommendations based off what you are asking for, completely influenced by top search results
Artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed the way Australians are finding information.
Need the best running shoes? Ask AI. Looking for a new skincare routine? AI can recommend one in seconds from the first product you use when you wake up, to the very last one before you go to sleep.
Planning a holiday? AI will happily build your itinerary. And probably do it before you’ve even taken the first sip of your morning coffee.
However, while AI is getting remarkably good at delivering answers, there’s still one burning question many people ask before they make a decision.
B&T has partnered with Reddit on a five-part series exploring the changing nature of consumer decision-making following the Reddit: IRL roadshow, which recently brought together marketers across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
If the first article explored why validation has become a critical part of modern marketing, and the second examined why consumers turn to Reddit for trustworthy answers, this instalment looks at where Reddit fits in an AI-driven world.
As AI becomes an increasingly common starting point for discovery, Reddit argues its role isn’t to compete with AI or search engines, but to complement them.
The platform describes itself as the human validation layer sitting between discovery and decision.
Whether it’s buying a laptop, choosing a credit card, booking accommodation or deciding between two beauty products, AI can summarise features and compare options. But many consumers still want reassurance from people who’ve actually used the product.
It’s why Reddit says nearly nine in 10 Redditors verify AI-generated recommendations with real people on the platform before making a purchase.
The internet has never had more information, yet consumers often feel less certain about what to believe.
Generative AI can occasionally hallucinate, search results can prioritise sponsored content and reviews across the web aren’t always easy to trust.
Reddit’s answer is community.
Rather than relying on a single recommendation, users can read conversations involving dozens or even hundreds of people sharing their own experiences, highlighting pros and cons, debating alternatives and challenging one another’s opinions.
Hayley Saddleton.
“Most advertising gives you the explicit message a brand wants to land. Reddit gives you the implicit detail people actually need to make a decision, which looks like the nuance, caveats and lived experience that rarely make it into a campaign,” Reddit’s Country Lead, Business Marketing for Australia and New Zealand Hayley Saddleton, told B&T.
“And as more of the internet becomes polished, optimised and AI-generated, the value of that implicit human detail only increases.”
According to Reddit, the platform plays three distinct roles throughout the decision-making journey.
First comes validation. AI might recommend a product, but Reddit gives people somewhere to test whether those recommendations stand up to real-world experience. Reddit says research shows 84 per cent of shoppers feel more confident in their decisions after researching on the platform.
Then comes discovery. Recommendation algorithms often surface the same trending products, while Reddit communities regularly introduce niche brands, lesser-known alternatives and practical advice based on lived experience. These are the kinds of conversations that don’t always make it into AI summaries.
Finally comes confidence.
Reading side-by-side comparisons, honest reviews and seeing where community consensus lands can ultimately help reduce decision paralysis and make choosing easier.
It’s a process Reddit believes has become even more valuable as AI accelerates the top of the purchase funnel.
For marketers, the takeaway isn’t that AI is replacing search, or that Reddit is replacing AI.
Instead, both technologies increasingly work together. AI helps consumers discover possibilities faster, and Reddit helps them determine whether those possibilities are worth acting on.
“What we’re seeing in Australia is that marketers are very comfortable buying attention, but they’re increasingly interested in where trust gets built,” Saddleton said.
As AI reshapes how consumers discover brands, products and services, Reddit believes competitive advantage won’t simply come from being the answer AI provides.
It will come from being the brand that people continue recommending when real humans join the conversation.
In an era of AI-generated abundance, the scarce thing is not information. It is confidence, and that is increasingly being built through human conversation on Reddit.
