If you thought there was a little bit more chaos than usual on your Sunday night TV viewing, you certainly weren’t imagining it. With both My Kitchen Rules (MKR) and The Golden Bachelor Australia wrapping up their seasons, the country was collectively holding their breath for the winner announcements.
While both served emotion and drama, it was My Kitchen Rules that came out on top with a total TV national reach of 2.289 million and a national average of 1,170,000, beating The Golden Bachelor, which still had a very respectable 2.014 million reach but an average of only 836,000.
With one show crowning a couple in love and the other making two footy dads $100,000 richer, it really all came down to what kind of fantasy you’re living.
MKR was billed as the “closest finale ever,” and it did not disappoint. The two remaining teams, Justin and Will & Maria and Bailey made it to the finals after breaking away from the pack in the semi’s and in the opening minutes of the finale, it was clear this was not going to be an easy challenge.
The infamous 100-plate challenge saw both teams tasked with serving up canapés, seafood, meat and dessert, four courses, 100 plates. With no room for meltdowns, the judges didn’t shy away from the pressure, and the contestants certainly delivered. Colin even admitted that Maria and Bailey’s meat course sauce was so good he and Manu “actually drank it at one stage.”
In the end, footy mates Justin and Will took the crown by just one point, finishing on 73 out of 80 and leaving high-performing powerhouse duo Maria and Bailey just behind on 72.
“We’ve accomplished what we set out to do – we’ve made our kids proud, we’ve made ourselves proud, and that’s the main thing,” the pair said. “I just want to go home, hang out with my kids, and then? The world’s our oyster.”
Over on Nine, Golden Bachelor Bear chose Sunny, declaring, “I’m in love again! I’ve never met anyone like Sunny.”
Much to his relief, Sunny responded with a tear-triggering confession of her own, admitting, “My heart is full of joy and happiness and love for you, and I’m looking forward to the journey with you.”
On Saturday, the lack of sports showed with news dominating ratings. Ultimately, Nine won the night, dominating Seven with a total TV national reach of 1,597,000 and a national average of 984,000.
