Meet The People Behind Reddit’s Growth In Australia

B&T

If you spend enough time on Reddit, it’s likely that you’ve come across conversations about almost anything right under your nose – whether you were looking for it or not.

Behind those conversations is a growing Australian team helping Reddit become a bigger part of the way brands understand, reach and engage with consumers.

Over the past 12 months, Reddit has tripled its Australian team, expanding from a local team of four in 2021 into a broader operation spanning sales, measurement, creative and marketing.

More than 12 million Australians now visit Reddit each week, making Australia one of the platform’s top-five markets.

And as the platform’s local presence grows, so too is the conversation with advertisers changing. It is moving from “Why Reddit?” to a more practical question: “How do we build Reddit into our strategy?”

That was a key theme of Reddit’s recent IRL roadshow, which brought together marketers across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to discuss the changing nature of discovery, decision-making and trust.

B&T has partnered with Reddit on a five-part series titled ‘The Validation Economy’ exploring the changing nature of consumer decision-making following the roadshow.

In this final article we take a peek behind the curtain at some of the people helping drive Reddit’s next phase of growth in Australia.

Cassie Gilbert

For Cassie Gilbert, Reddit’s Australian growth is happening against a broader change in consumer behaviour.

Gilbert, who has recently been promoted from head of agency development to director, large customer sales AUS, describes the shift as the rise of what Reddit calls the “validation economy”.

As consumers face more choice and more perceived risk when making decisions, she says they are increasingly looking for human perspectives before committing.

“We’ve entered what we call the validation economy,” Gilbert said

The opportunity for brands, she argues, is no longer simply about capturing attention, but understanding and participating in the conversations where decisions are actually being validated.

That is also changing what advertisers are asking of Reddit.

“The conversation is increasingly moving from ‘Why Reddit?’ to ‘How do we build Reddit into our strategy?’” Gilbert says.

For her, the next opportunity is building a deeper local operation that can help Australian advertisers turn Reddit’s communities and consumer intelligence into measurable business outcomes.

And that is where the growth of the team becomes significant.

Ryan Day

Ryan Day, senior manager, large customer sales, has seen that change first-hand.

The tripling of Reddit’s Australian team over the past year reflects what he says is happening in conversations with brands and agencies.

“Australian marketers are looking beyond reach alone,” Day said. “They want to understand what their customers genuinely think, where decisions are being shaped and how they can participate credibly.”

That appetite is stretching across categories and across the marketing funnel.

It also means Reddit’s local operation increasingly needs to offer more than access to an audience.

Day says he is excited by the opportunity to bring more specialist support to Australian customers, particularly across creative, measurement and strategic planning.

Because as Reddit becomes a more established part of local media plans, the questions from advertisers are becoming more sophisticated.

And that is where Martin “Marty” Suchy comes in.

Suchy was recently promoted to sales manager, large customer sales.

His perspective is closer to the practical questions marketers are now asking: How can Reddit be scaled? How can its impact be measured? And how does it complement everything else already in a media plan?

“As the internet becomes more automated, authentic human perspective becomes even more valuable,” Suchy said.

At the same time, he believes Reddit has become a whole lot easier for brands to plan, buy and measure.

That combination — human conversation alongside increasingly sophisticated advertising and measurement capabilities — is helping shift the conversation from experimentation towards sustained investment.

Suchy points to products including Reddit Insights, Campaign Planner and Max Campaigns, alongside improved measurement solutions, as part of that evolution.

For him, the opportunity is to help advertisers turn the insights emerging from communities into something they can actually act on.

There is another side to that challenge, however.

Stephanie Shang

For Stephanie Shang, sales manager, AUS, the question is not simply what brands can do on Reddit, but how they can do it without losing sight of what makes the platform different.

Shang moderated conversations with advertisers during Reddit IRL and says one of the things that stood out was how willing marketers are to move beyond the tried and tested.

Whether they operate in highly regulated categories or have more freedom to experiment, she says brands are looking for ways to combine bravery with the right safeguards, measurement and understanding of community.

“Brands are coming to us with greater curiosity and more ambitious briefs,” Shang said.

They want to understand what they can do on Reddit that they cannot do elsewhere — from participating in high-intent conversations to testing new creative and measurement approaches.

That means the role of Reddit’s local team is increasingly about helping advertisers navigate those opportunities in a way that feels useful, relevant and native to the platform.

Scott Mitchell

That opportunity is not limited to the biggest advertisers.

Scott Mitchell, manager, enterprise sales, is focused on Reddit’s relationships with independent media agencies and direct clients.

He says there is “real momentum” among independent agencies and clients working directly with Reddit.

The common thread is that they are looking for more than another reach channel.

They want audience insight, access to high-intent moments and the flexibility to solve specific business challenges.

And importantly, Mitchell says those conversations are moving quickly.

What begins as an agency or advertiser learning about Reddit can progress into testing, repeat investment and broader strategic planning.

For independent agencies in particular, he sees an opportunity to work more closely with Reddit earlier in the process.

“Independent agencies bring speed, creativity and a close understanding of their clients’ businesses,” Mitchell said.

For Reddit, that creates an opportunity to collaborate around real client problems rather than simply slotting the platform into an existing media plan.
