When Uncensored CMO host Jon Evans took to the stage at Cairns Crocodiles, presented by Pinterest, this year, there was no shortage of questions from an audience keen to pick the brains of a man who has interviewed some of the biggest CMOs and marketing thinkers in the world.
There was, however, a shortage of time, as curious delegates fired out questions left, right and centre.
So, after not getting through all of the audience questions in Cairns, Evans headed back into the studio with Commercial Radio & Audio CEO Lizzie Young to finish the job.
From the best CMO he’s ever interviewed and the other podcasts he listens to, to staying relevant as a marketer in the age of AI, the biggest missteps marketers are making, the three books every marketer should read and how to actually get promoted, check out Evans’ backstage answers to the questions we couldn’t squeeze in on stage.
But in case you missed the full session on day two of this year’s landmark event, Evans had plenty to say there too. Watch that first below:
Drawing on years spent interviewing the world’s leading marketers for Uncensored CMO, Evans explored why the best marketers act more like founders than “walking press releases”, why CMOs should be better placed than most to make the leap into the CEO hot seat and why marketers need to get much better at speaking the language of the boardroom.
He also argued that the best marketers stay relentlessly close to their customers and have a direct line between consumer insight and action.
The extended Q&A with Evans and Young picks up where the above Cairns Crocodiles conversation left off, covering everything from the CMOs he admires most to the marketing opinions he fundamentally disagrees with. And, importantly, why he wears two watches.
Evans formed part of a world-class lineup at this year’s Cairns Crocodiles, which also featured Academy Award and Grammy-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi, S4 Capital founder and executive chairman Sir Martin Sorrell, Alien Baby founder and chief strategy officer and IE7 chief marketing officer Paula Bloodworth, It’s A Lot podcast and TV host Abbie Chatfield, advertising trailblazer Jane Evans and more.
