Independent PR agency Good Talent Media (GTM) has appointed Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Colin Hunter Jnr to its Advisory Board, as the agency looks to strengthen its work across advocacy, social impact and for-purpose communications.
Hunter Jnr is a Director of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and brings more than two decades of experience working across Aboriginal affairs.
He previously spent 14 years as Senior Advisor in Aboriginal Partnerships at the City of Yarra, where he advised government, corporate and community organisations on consultation, policy, Reconciliation Action Plans and engagement with Traditional Owners.
“Advocacy is most powerful when it’s informed by the people and communities it seeks to represent,” Hunter Jnr said.
“A big part of my work over the years has been about doing just that. Bringing people together, creating understanding and helping organisations nurture stronger relationships with communities.”
Hunter Jnr is also a familiar face at some of Australia’s biggest events, having delivered Welcome to Country ceremonies at the AFL and AFLW Grand Finals, Brownlow Medal and Melbourne Cup, as well as for the Dalai Lama and Prince Harry and Meghan.
Describing himself as a “Social Justice Warrior”, Hunter Jnr said he is focused on creating a level playing field for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
“I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to GTM and working alongside a team that shares my commitment to creating positive impact,” he said.
GTM founder Tony Nicholls said the appointment would add a new perspective to the agency’s work with purpose-led organisations.
“Uncle Colin’s experience and commitment to creating better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will bring an invaluable perspective to the work we do here at GTM,” Nicholls said.
“It’s an honour to have Uncle Colin join us and we look forward to the impact of his guidance.”
Founded by former journalist Nicholls in 2015, GTM specialises in earned media, crisis communications and for-purpose campaigns. The agency says it has generated more than $100 million in earned media for clients across the not-for-profit, government and social impact sectors.
