YouTube has announced it’s offering a paid subscription model, giving users the option to remove the ads for $9.99 a month.
No longer will you be trying to watch programs, music videos, whatever you hook your eyes on and be interrupted by ads. The video giant has also said starting next year members will have access to original movies and TV shows.
However, don’t go calling it another Netflix.
At a launch event over in the States, the guy who overseas business functions, Robert Kyncl, told the media it doesn’t want to be compared to the streaming video on demand giant, which has taken Australia by storm.
“Our membership service is completely different from what Netflix is,” Bloomberg reported him saying.
“Every step that we have taken along the way is 180 completely the opposite of what Netflix is doing.”
In YouTube’s official blog, Matt Leske, senior product manager at YouTube, said October 28 marks the day YouTube Red will begin.
It’s a membership based initiative, and besides just not having ads, will mean members can save videos on phones or tablets and play videos in the background.
Fans of the original ad-funded YouTube though will still have access to it, never fear.
“The free, ad-supported version of YouTube we all know and love isn’t going anywhere. You’ll still be able to enjoy YouTube, along with the YouTube Kids, Gaming and Music apps free of charge.
