Chiquita King is an adland veteran who recently founded her own agency: Coffee Cocoa Gunpowder.
She is the epitome of a powerful woman and the perfect candidate for our Women to Watch series.
Every year, B&T profiles women doing amazing things in the industry as part of our annual Women in Media Awards presented by Bauer Media. Today, we’re excited to hear from King herself. Check out what she had to say below.
I think it’s really important for women in leadership to be showcased, to be shared, and to be celebrated. It’s important for powerful women to be in the public eye so that younger girls or younger women on their journey can go ‘wow, I can be that’. That’s why I believe the Women in Media Awards are so important.
It’s like the old the saying – if you can see it, you can be it. But that’s not always the case because some people just don’t see limitations, whether they exist or not. I also think the WIM awards are important because they shine a light on one of the biggest impediments to equality in the workplace, which is self-belief.
I’ve been fortunate to have met so many powerful women in my life, including Lianne Cawood, a previous boss of mine. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her. She was the first person to truly make me aware of my potential, and for that, I am forever grateful.
I also think the WIM awards are important because they shine a light on one of the biggest impediments to equality in the workplace, which I believe is self-belief. Women have to believe in themselves. Sometimes there are opportunities that arise, sometimes there aren’t. Regardless, it takes self-belief, because sometimes you have to create the opportunity for yourself. And that never happens unless you have self-belief, and that’s very different to arrogance. I’m allergic to arrogance. There is a difference!
What is something that everyone can do today that could potentially make a massive change in the struggle for equality?
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
To know that I cannot control what happens, but I can control how I respond.
