As we continue to push towards an equal future, more and more women are forging the paths for others. And B&T doesn’t think it’s right that some of these women aren’t recognised for their inspiring efforts every day. Which is why we’ve created a Women in Media series!

This series is to celebrate our annual Women in Media Awards – where we’ll be celebrating the inspirational women in our industry.

Our last profile was on the inspiring Aimee Buchanan from OMD, and the first victim for this week is Mindshare Sydney managing director, Kate O’Ryan-Roeder!

Guiltiest pleasure?

Singing along to the cheesiest music I can find at the top of my lungs while driving, despite the fact I don’t know any of the words and I can’t hit a note to save myself.

Absolutely butchering the Top 40 is my true calling in life.

Your house is on fire (people and animals are fine). What is the one possession you would you save?

A 70-year old stuffed toy koala that’s been passed down through the generations from my grandad to my dad, to me, and now to my little toddler.

What profession, other than your own, would you never want to attempt?

I can safely say I would never want to attempt aerial ski jumping. Total respect for what they do, but flying off mountains on two sticks doesn’t quite suit my style of adventure.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

“Treat others as you want to be treated and get to know what everyone does in the agency.”

What’s your proudest professional moment?

My proudest professional moment was becoming one of the youngest Managing Partners at Mindshare Worldwide when I was based in London.

It was a career defining moment that taught me a lot about perseverance, self-belief and achieving goals.

What women do you find inspiring?

The Aussie Women’s Rugby 7s team. They are integral to the international game, passionate as well as compassionate and fearless. They’re all incredibly inspiring.

What advice would you give to young aspiring women?

Back yourself, believe in yourself, grit your teeth, throw your hat in the ring, the sky is the limit. All those little clichés that push you to give it a crack – whatever ‘it’ may be.

You don’t want to look back on a long list of ‘I wish I tried that when I was young’ moments.

Why are women vital to your industry?

Every individual brings something different to the table, whether it’s how they think, feel, act or react. Gender diversity is part of this which is why it’s so vital to our industry.

If we can truly harness the power of diversity then we can drive stronger partnerships, create better products and ultimately achieve better results.

B&T‘s Women in Media Awards 2018 will be held on Friday 17 August 2018 at Doltone House – Jones Bay Wharf. Grab early bird tickets to the event here and find all other info on the website
