Today’s Women In Media Profile is none other than AMI boss Lee Tonitto. If you need a little more ying than yang, you need to re-set the old chakras, then you need to read this…

Grace only comes from learning…
I think your life’s course is not determined by doing the things you know you can do – it’s determined by trying to do hard things outside your natural skill set.

Last year I had some private lessons with the dean of the university for the Dali Lama, who trains all the Lamas…
To be in that man’s presence, to spend private time with him, just having a conversation about the future, life and talking about its very broad concepts was an honour and an amazing experience. I would like to travel to his native country and study more mindfulness training at his monastery which is near Bhutan and the foothills of the Himalayas.

My biggest personal achievement was climbing Grey Glacier in the Patagonian Ice Field on New year’s Day…
I’d always wanted to go to Patagonia in Torres de Paine National Park. It’s the eighth wonder of the world and has always been on my bucket list, if you will. It was amazing, everything from horse riding to hiking to just absorbing the unreal, beautiful nature and environment.

Life isn’t about burning the candle at both ends
I generally think you’re more productive if you figure out your way to revitalise, rest, and restore, mentally and physically. I try to sit alone in silence for at least 10 minutes every day and use that time to think, plan, reflect, and dream. I’ve always been quite a reflective person, but, out of that, I have quite good creativity and productive thinking and what I call an epiphany.

I have always embraced diversity…
I’ve been to around 35 countries. I love exploring and experiencing different cultures and people. I also visited China for six weeks when it first opened to Westerners.

Leadership is really about setting a tone, motivating, inspiring, and never giving up when others feel like quitting…
In my leadership, I always describe how what we’re doing leads us to a better place and paint that picture.I think it’s all about being bold and having a vision but also have the humility that achieving that vision will take the efforts of many people. And being very passionate, but not in an overbearing way, but that you’re charismatic and explain the what and the why. The next most important one is the how – how it affects them and how they contribute to taking us to a better place. I’m a big believer in Simon Sinek’s golden circle.

Sometimes there’s speed bumps along that journey between where we are today and where we want to go tomorrow…
So I try to coach and enable people to feel like they’re making a valuable contribution and being the best they can be. I want them to leap out of bed and feel ‘wow I really want to be part of this’.

The focus for the AMI for the next year is making a contribution to improving professionalism amongst marketers in Australia…
Specifically, at our business we want to grow membership, build and expand on strategic partnerships and alliances, and re-imagine our professional development program with the view to providing more online delivery.
