Weekly Ad Round-Up: The Good, The Bad And The Bacon Lovers

Weekly Ad Round-Up: The Good, The Bad And The Bacon Lovers

This week’s Friday advert round-up is all about a giant corn chip guitar, a dating app for bacon fans and chemist warehouse busted for smoking.

The Good

An American grill chain called Moe’s Southwest Grill  has created a giant tortilla chip into a playable electric guitar. “We started talking about how cool it would be to create an actual guitar out of chips,” Moe’s creative director Brandon Friedman told AdWeek.

“Then we said, what if it could actually play? And finally, we felt like we needed to give it that extra rock touch by smashing it, which gave us the perfect transition to promote the queso and the event.”

The Bad

The Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) has upheld the one complaint against a Chemist Warehouse Father’s Day campaign called ‘Smell like a Sir’. The ad features an image of a boy and man, both wearing false moustaches, bow ties and a monocle. The man is holding a pipe and the text reads, “Smell like a sir! This Father’s Day”.

Chemist Warehouse response to ASB was super sassy: “Firstly let me apologise for the tardiness of this response but to be frank we considered the complaint so fatuous and unfounded that we did not believe a response would be necessary to assist the bureau in dismissing it.”

The ASB didn’t dismiss the complaint. According to the ASB “The Board considered Section 2.6 of the Code. Section 2.6 of the Code states: Advertising or Marketing Communications shall not depict material contrary to Prevailing Community Standards on health and safety.

“Consistent with its previous determination the Board considered that presenting smoking in a positive light is contrary to Prevailing Community Standards on health and safety. Finding that the advertisement did breach the Code, the Board upheld the complaint.”

The Bacon

The Oscar Mayer Company is a meat and cold cut production company, which has launched a real dating app for bacon lovers. According to the site the Sizzl app “connect with thousands of like-minded lovers who share your selective taste in bacon that’s cured for 12 hours, and smoke-housed for another 12.”

You download the app, specify your bacon preferences in a customisable profile, upload photos and start swiping your bacon greasy paws through pictures of local bacon lovers. It’s Tinder for people with clogged arteries.
