As was to be expected, last night’s State of Origin has proven a rating bonanza, pulling 2.53 million viewers for Nine and making it the most watched show of 2018.

NSW won the match 22-12 and, interestingly, the numbers were exactly the same for the first game in the series last year. Viewer numbers were also up in Melbourne, vindicating playing the game at the MCG.

Last night’s encounter saw off the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony (2.01 million) as the year’s most watched show. Last night’s OzTAM numbers also don’t include an estimated million-plus fans who watched the game in pubs and clubs.

On the back of the footy, Nine smashed all-comers for audience share last night, boasting an impressive 46 per cent of eyeballs. Seven had to settle for just 19.6 per cent, Ten had 15 per cent, the ABC 14.4 per cent and SBS mustered a mere five per cent.

League aside, Nine’s news (1.01 million) got a halo effect from Origin and beat rival Seven’s bulletin (one million). Seven’s House Rules took a beating as viewers ditched if for the footy, it could only muster 343,000 in three cities.

Over at Ten, MasterChef (733,000) proved a good alternative for football haters, while The Project had 591,000.

The ABC appeared rather unaffected by the footy, its night went thus: ABC News (727,000), Gruen (643,000), Julia Zemiro’s Home Delivery (594,000), 7:30 (581,000), The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (512,000), Corey White’s Roadmap to Paradise (245,000) and Think Tank (238,000).

The SBS’ best was a repeat of Untold Australia that pulled 168,000.
