UM Named Best Place To Work With Under 100 Employees By BRW

Creative connections agency UM has been hailed as the best place to work, under 100 employees, by publication BRW.

Software company Atlassian took the top place in the over 100 employees category.

The study aims to identify, recognise, learn from, and spread the word about best practices of organisations that achieve business objectives by being great workplaces.

According to Zrinka Lovrencic, managing director at GPTW Australia, the company who conducted the research, two major great workplace trends emerged this year – strong organisational alignment and a clear, definitive employee value proposition.

“Employees like to know that they are working towards a goal and to trust that leadership has the skills and competency to take them there,” said Lovrencic. “Management’s ability to convey a clear view of where the organisation is going and how it is going to get there directly impacts employees’ confidence in the future of the business.”

It’s not just about what the company has physically, value, trust and fair treatment are necessities.

“A foosball table and free drinks are nice but they are no replacement for trust,” said BRW editor Michael Bailey. “Our Best Places To Work tend to share a lot with their employees, including honest updates on how the company is doing and fair rewards for above-and-beyond effort. For the growing number of ‘millennials’ in Australia’s workplaces, a sense of their employer contributing to its community is also important.”

Mat Baxter, CEO of UM (pictured above) made the nomination to be a great place to work part of the companies KPIs (Key Performance Index) when he took the helm in 2010.

In the under 100 employees category, the top five were UM, physiotherapist The Physio Co, software company Intuit Inc., entrepreneurial company Entourage and technology business Amobee.

GroupM media agencies MEC and Maxus also made the cut, coming in at 9th and 23rd place respectively.

In the over 100 employees category, the top five were: Atlassian, cosmetics company MECCA Brands, market trading business Optiver, medical technologies company Stryker and management consulting business Nous Group.

Media agency OMD Australia also took a place on the list a number 18, with another media agency Mindshare grabbing 19th place.

NOVA Entertainment also made the list at number 25.

Of its making of the list, OMD Australia’s CEO Peter Horgan said: “We are delighted to be listed again as one of the 50 best places to work in Australia. A clearly articulated business vision with a key priority on people and integrity, is one that cultivates elevated performance. This consistent focus on our people is truly ingrained in our culture, and continues to position us as one of the most awarded Agencies globally”.
