Twitter Removes 140 Character Restriction From Direct Messages

Twitter has taken away the limitation of 140 characters in its direct messaging offering, meaning you can now chat away with people in the privacy of your own message.

The update won’t affect public tweets however – they’ll still have a limit of 140 characters.

Twitter explained the change was to help make “the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun”.

“While Twitter is largely a public experience, Direct Messages let you have private conversations about the memes, news, movements, and events that unfold on Twitter,” explained product manager Sachin Agarwal in blog post.

“Each of the hundreds of millions of Tweets sent across Twitter every day is an opportunity for you to spark a conversation about what’s happening in your world. That’s why we’ve made a number of changes to Direct Messages over the last few months.

“Today’s change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun.”

The changes will be rolling out across Twitter products and apps around the world.

Twitter has gone through a number of changes in the past few months, one of the most recent being the cracking down on plagiarised jokes.

Similarly, the rise of video led Twitter to introduce auto-playing videos. However, noted advertisers wouldn’t pay for the video unless it had been 100 per cent seen – 100 per cent being three seconds of watching.
