For almost 14 years, social media users have been using hashtags to connect with trends, ideas and communities.
To commemorate the introduction of hashtags, Twitter is this week celebrating #HashtagDay.
#HashtagDay falls on August 23 – the day in which Chris Messina first proposed the use of hashtags on social media.
“how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]?” he Tweeted in 2007.
“Over the years, it has evolved from a user-created way to categorise or ‘tag’ Tweets, to become part of our everyday speech, changing the nature of communication online and becoming one of the most influential symbols of the digital age,” Twitter said in a statement.
To celebrate the occasion, Twitter has launched a new #HashtagDay emoji, which is live for the day and available in multiple languages.
Twitter has also shared information into the top hashtags in Australia.
“Whether people are watching a sporting event, a reality show or the latest movie, Twitter reignites the excitement of the co-viewing experience. Some of the other hashtags that ranked highly in Australia included reality television show #MAFS, along with sporting hashtags such as #NRL and #AFL,” Twitter said.
