Twitter Bans Transphobic Content

Twitter has now labeled transphobic harassment, including misgendering or “deadnaming” transgender people, as prohibited on the platform.

The change was announced in October, however news of the move has only recently been picked up by mainstream media.

While Twitter’s previous hateful conduct act prohibited “repeated and/or non-consensual slurs, epithets, racist and sexist tropes, or other content that degrades someone”, the new, rejigged policy stipulates “this includes targeted misgendering or dead-naming of transgender individuals”.

Speaking to The Verge, a Twitter spokesperson said: “Targeting someone because of their gender identity has always been a violation of our Hateful Conduct policy.

“We updated our Terms of Service earlier this year with more specifics on this type of speech to ensure our rules and how we enforce them are clear to everyone.”

In October, the platform revealed its revenue had grown 29 per cent in quarter three of 2018.

As well as this advertising revenue totalled US$650 million, an increase of 29 per cent year-over-year.

US revenue totalled US$423 million, an increase of 28 per cent year-over-year and international revenue totalled US$335 million, an increase of 30 per cent year-over-year.

Speaking on the results at the time, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said: “We’re achieving meaningful progress in our efforts to make Twitter a healthier and valuable everyday service.

“We’re doing a better job detecting and removing spammy and suspicious accounts at sign-up.

“We’re also continuing to introduce improvements that make it easier for people to follow events, topics and interests on Twitter, like adding support for US TV shows in our new event infrastructure.

“This quarter’s strong results prove we can prioritise the long-term health of Twitter while growing the number of people who participate in public conversation.”
