Turnbull Slams ScoMo For Working As “A Team” With News Corp

Former PM Malcolm Turnbull has accused prime minister Scott Morrison of essentially working as “a team” with Murdoch-owned News Corp newspapers.

Turnbull has joined Kevin Rudd in calls for a petition for a Royal Commission into the Murdoch media empire.

It follows Turnbull accusing Murdoch in his recent memoir of playing a role in the demise of his time as prime minister.

And now, Turnbull told ABC’s 7.30 he believes Morrison and the Murdoch press are “operating like a team”, with Murdoch “backing [Morrison] up”, with Turnbull adding Morrison is “determined not to suffer the same fate” he did.

Although Rudd’s petition has over half a million signatures, it has so far failed to secure a royal commission. The Greens will instead hold a Senate inquiry.

Turnbull further called out News Corp as “propaganda”.

He told 7.30: “The critical thing, you have to recognise that News Corp is now essentially propaganda. It’s a political organisation that employs a lot of journalists.”

Turnbull also called Tony Abbott for operating in an “almost partnership” with News Corp. Turnbull said News Corp’s journalist’s had exclusive access to Cabinet decision before they were taken.

Abbott, however, said Turnbull’s accusations are “baseless smears”.

Neither Morrison nor News Corp responded to 7.30‘s request for comment.
