Tuesday TV Wrap: The Bushfires Send Sunrise’s Numbers Soaring To A 2019 High

Confirmation of Karl Stefanovic’s return to the Today show in 2020 yesterday appeared to have one significant effect – it sent arch-rival Sunrise’s numbers flying.

Seven’s breakfast show posted a whopping 329,000 according to OzTAM metro numbers and its best numbers all year. Still, it was arguably its bushfire coverage – rather than news of Karl’s imminent return – that was the root of the brekkie show’s significant boost.

Justifying Nine bosses decision to dump the current Today line-up, it posted a sluggish 209,000 in comparison.

All this translated to an easy win for Seven in yesterday’s audience share. The network pulled 30.5 per cent (all channels). Nine did 25.8 per cent, 10 had 19.3 per cent, the ABC did 15.9 per cent and SBS pulled 8.5 per cent.

In further proof that viewers are hungry for bushfire news, all of the evening’s news bulletins posted healthy numbers. Seven’s 6pm news pulling 1.027 million, Nine’s did 871,000, ACA had 746,000, the ABC’s 7pm news had 741,000 and 10 News First managed 379,000.

When it came to entertainment, Home And Away won the honours with 636,000. Seven’s Bride And Prejudice posted 608,000, The Chase had 539,000 and Hot Seat did 468,000.

10’s The Project pulled 453,000, Nine’s Paramedics managed 379,000, Seven’s The Rookie had 364,000 and 10’s One Born Every Minute did 334,000.
