Australia came tantalising close to a new prime minister early yesterday morning and the leadership challenge certainly proved good news for news programming last night.
Of the top seven shows on Tuesday, six were news related, with the ABC’s 7pm bulletin (772,000) beating the likes of Hamish And Andy (699,000) and Survivor (661,000).
Seven’s 6pm bulletin was the most watched show of the night with 1.007 million, while Nine’s bulletin pulled in 910,000.
Nine won the night with 29.8 per cent audience share, Seven had to settle for 25.8 per cent, Ten managed 18.4 per cent, the ABC had 17.8 per cent and SBS pulled 8.2 per cent.
The Block provided plenty of relief from the prospect of Peter Dutton becoming prime minister, pulling 952,000. Nine’s other highlights were ACA (736,000), Hamish And Andy (699,000) and Hot Seat (447,000).
For Seven, Home And Away pulled 668,000, The Chase had 581,000 and 800 Words managed 472,000. Dance Boss can’t end soon enough for network bosses, it posted its worst ever result last night with just 397,000.
Over at Ten, The Project managed 535,000. While the latest in the network’s ‘pilot week’ – the tearjerker Taboo – was disappointing with 277,000. Pointless also remains in the doldrums, with a mere 236,000.
The ABC’s night ran thus: 7pm news (772,000), 7.30 (599,000), Foreign Correspondent (489,000), Catalyst (453,000) and Search For Second Earth (273,000).
One again, it was trains for SBS, its best, Great Indian Railway Journeys, doing well with 364,000.
