After three years together as hosts of Triple J’s breakfast show, Matt Okine and Alex Dyson will not be returning to the government-funded station in 2017.
Dyson fought back tears on air this morning as the duo announced they were finishing up on Triple J at the end of the year.
“We haven’t been pushed,” Dyson said. “We’re jumping.”
“It’s absolutely amicable,” Okine added. “It’s just deciding that we’re going to move on to different things.
After 10 years at the station, Dyson said he felt it was time to “give someone a go”, and plans to travel the world and focus on writing.
Meanwhile, Okine plans to continue his career as a comedian, commit more time to his music project, Boilermakers, and focus on TV.
Okine said he did not think people realised how little he and Dyson knew about each other before working together on radio.
“It’s genuinely quite miraculous that we were able to do this show as well as we have over the last few years and had as much fun as we have,” he said.
Triple J content director Ollie Ward said it has been “an awesome ride” working with Okine and Dyson.
“As soon as I wake up, I hit the Triple J app to hear what Matt & Alex are talking about,” he said.
“Not because I have to – I’m genuinely a massive fan.
“I can’t wait to see what they do next.”
