Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has announced that Russia has banned Instagram and expressed his disappointment.
Now, over 80 million Russian Instagram users will no longer be able to access the app and engage with people via the social media app.
Obviously, Instagram is known for its selfies and people posting photos of their avocado on toast but it’s also a place for people to connect. Given the current war, a virtual connection seems more important than ever.
Mosseri took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the decision and tweeted. “This decision will cut 80 million in Russia off from one another, and from the rest of the world as ~80% of people in Russia follow an Instagram account outside their country. This is wrong.”
On Monday, Instagram will be blocked in Russia. This decision will cut 80 million in Russia off from one another, and from the rest of the world as ~80% of people in Russia follow an Instagram account outside their country. This is wrong.

Russia banning Instagram comes after Meta which owns Instagram has changed it’s guidelines to allow for threats of violence to be made against Russian soldiers.
Of course, the decision came after Russia invaded Ukraine and it’s assumedly born from the idea of allowing Meta’s social media apps to be a source of communication for Ukrainians.
Naturally, a decision Russia wasn’t thrilled with, hence the countries boycott of Instagram.
