Step aside vampires and ghouls, this year’s must-have Halloween costume appears to be the ‘Karen’, a dedication to white, privileged, middle-aged women who always want to speak to the manager.

The ‘Karen’ get-up has appeared online and features her signature bob-style haircut wig and a pair of sunglasses.

It is being marketed by the American company Spirit, one of the country’s biggest suppliers of Halloween costumes and decorations.

The outfit has since been shared on Twitter to a very mixed reaction – some people calling it a “must-have”, while detractors are claiming the manufacturer is “profiting off racist, entitled white women”.

One person tweeted: “This is exactly why we need to stop making jokes out of racism. The Karen thing was never funny to begin with.”

Another added: “And just like that, the word ‘Karen’ has lost all contextual weight and importance. It’s just now a silly quip’ and ‘I don’t like how they’re profiting from the very real issue of racism.”

Another said: “Some of them don’t even need a costume! They expose themselves daily!”
