After nabbing a grant of nearly $US3 million from the US-based Knight Foundation – a foundation that promotes journalism -global publication The Guardian is exploring new ways of improving its mobile news offering.

The US version of The Guardian will create a new editorial and production team who will form an innovation lab, with the aim of finding new ways for readers to consume news on numerous mobile devices.

An article on The Guardian’s website itself details the innovation, explaining how the team will work from the US office, but will have access to stories and resources on a global scale.

“The innovation lab will sit at the heart of our US newsroom and will draw on the collective expertise of our team in order to do things differently in the mobile space,” said Katharine Viner, editor-in-chief of Guardian news and media.

“We’re also really excited to be sharing our results in an open environment, so others can learn from our experiments and get involved in the conversation about mobile journalism.”
