Forget Maps! Plan Your Journey With AR

You could soon navigate Sydney’s often confusing rail network with the help of augmented reality.

Visual designer Sarah Tan from ustwo has developed the AR experience.

“I’ve made an Augmented Reality (AR) experience where you can view the map of Sydney Rail Network with your Opal card (Sydney’s public transport card) as a little side project,” she posted on LinkedIn.

The user places an Opal card in front of the Facebook app camera, before an enlarged virtual map of the Sydney rail network appears.

This means you will not have to download any additional apps (other than Facebook) to use the service.

It’s perfect for when you might “want a quick glance of a transport map but there’s none around”, said Tan.

It was created using Facebook’s AR development platform SparkAR.

This isn’t the first instance of AR being used to help ease some of the pains of public transport.

In Sweden, train operator SJ has developed a solution that allows passengers to navigate their way to the platform at one of the world’s busiest train stations, Stockholm Central.

Similarly at Gatwick airport in the UK, travellers can use an AR map to find their way to the right gate at the enormous airport.
