Facebook’s Live Video Notifications Frustrating Some Users

Last week Facebook announced it was pritoritising live video streams to the top of people’s news feeds, unfortunately the notifications reminding people to watch live broadcasts have been occuring with such frequency it’s annoying a lot of Facebook users.

Facebook Live videos rolled out in December and is currently available when users follow a verified Pages, public figures using Mentions and just recently all iOS users. Facebook announced changes to the Live Stream algotithm in a joint press release with Facebook’s product manager Vibhi Kant and software engineer Jie Xu.

“Facebook Live videos are more likely to appear higher in News Feed when those videos are actually live, compared to after they are no longer live….Facebook Live videos are more interesting in the moment than after the fact.”

The update isn’t going down so well with some users:

A Facebook spokesperson told B&T : “We’ve heard from people that they don’t want to miss live videos from the people or Pages they care about, so we may send a notification if someone you’ve recently interacted with is going live, in case you want to tune in.

“One way you can currently control Live notifications is by clicking on the “Live Subscribe” button on the top of a Live video to get notified when that person goes Live again. You can also click on that same button as a way to turn off those specific notifications.

“However, we know people want control over the Live notifications they receive, so we’re working on making this experience better. We are starting to roll out a new setting that lets people turn off all Live notifications, through their Notifications settings, that will be available to all people soon.”
