Facebook Messenger Rolls Out 1,500 New ‘Diverse’ Emojis

Facebook Messenger app, which has 900 million monthly users, is launching 1,500 new emojis to give users the ability to customise the emojis characteristics including race, gender and sexuality.

Messenger’s new selection is accessible everywhere the app is available, including Android and the web. The new designs, gender-agnostic options and multi-colored emojis will be available on many Android devices and web products for the first time. Facebook is diversifying the genders to create a more balanced mix that’s more representative of our world. Now, using Messenger emojis, you’ll see a female police officer, runner, pedestrian, surfer and swimmer for the very first time, and we’ll keep rolling these out. Users will be asked their preferred skin tone when the update is available, there is an option to change it later.

David Marcus VP of messaging products posted on his Facebook page: “Emojis are such an important part of making messaging more expressive, so we wanted to make them even better for you, and ensure consistency across all platforms (iOS, Android, web).

“This update is rolling out globally over the next 48 hours. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do! As always, give it a spin and let us know how we can make these emojis even better for you going forward.”

Facebook isn’t the first technology platform to launch more diverse emojis, Google is pushing for 13 new female emojis to highlight diverse female careers and roles. The new emojis show woman in roles such as doctors, tech workers, mechanics, farmers, educators and rock stars.

A group of Google employees have submitted a proposal, titled Expanding Emoji Professions: Reducing Gender Inequality, to the Unicode Consortium which hopes to bring parity between existing male emoji and female emoji.

In the proposal the four Google developers said: “We believe we can have a larger positive impact by adding 13 new emoji that depict women across a representative sample of professions. We believe this will empower young women (the heaviest emoji users), and better reflect the pivotal roles women play in the world.”
