Tech Giant Apple Back On Top For Facebook’s March Hot Topics In Australia

Big-name companies and performers alike stole the show in March, connecting with Australians around a range of key moments. Festivals, holidays and causes in particular proved the perfect opportunity for brands, whether by adding to a passionate discussion or inviting people to join a celebration.

But it was Apple’s iPhone 7 that was the most talked about product on Facebook, possibly following rumours of the tech giant’s release of a brand new iPhone 7 Plus later in the year.

An alleged product leak of an iPhone 7 case also added fuel to the fire, with many speculating Apple may be planning to ditch the headphone socket in the new model.

It was no surprise to see Australians discussing sweet treats over Easter, with both Cadbury and Oreo nipping at Apple’s heels for airtime on Facebook. A Canstar Blue survey that revealed Cadbury was the number one brand that Aussie shoppers want to keep on supermarket shelves may have kept the chocolate giant on the tip of everyone’s tongue.

However, not all talk was necessarily positive, with a Melbourne man taking to Facebook with claims he had found unsavoury items in his Easter bunny.

Across in Instagram land beer brand Guinness took out the top spot, probably due to discussion of the beer as users’ drink of choice in the lead up to St Patrick’s Day. Guinness’ clever and shareable imagery celebrating Irish culture proved a hit for their holiday campaign!

Coming in second was role-playing video game Undertale, possibility stemming from gamers airing their frustrations in completing difficult sections of the game.

Easter and Good Friday were the most talked about moments across both platforms, with heaps of Aussie’s undoubtedly indulging in copious amounts of chocolate and sharing every moment of it.

International Women’s Day, Mardi Gras and Saint Patrick’s Day were also celebrated widely with thousands of Aussie’s sharing their views or celebrations.  Even Malcolm Turnbull went online to boast of being the first PM to ever formally attend Mardi Gras.

Older Aussie men continued to debate the news about the US Primaries, with US presidential hopeful Donald Trump the most talked about individual on Facebook. In the field of sport, UFC champions Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor dominated male conversations, with underdog Diaz taking down McGregor in the second round of their March fight. Arnold Schwarzenegger got people buzzing on Instagram after attending a body building competition in Melbourne.

Judging from the Hot Topics March graphs, here is the lists of what Aussie Facebook and Instagram users were talking about.
