Sydney Event To Explore Workplace Harassment In Media Industry

The Public Relations Institute of Australia NSW Young Guns will be hosting a workshop covering workplace harassment in the media industry.

The event, dubbed #MeToo and Mean Girls: Dealing with Workplace Harassment, will unpack how this issue affects communications professionals in Australia, educate practitioners on how to recognise more subtle versions of bullying and sexualisation, and offer some practical advice to victims of unwanted attention.

Leading communications professionals and industry experts will share their insights and explore the issue with focused presentations and group discussion.

The panel will be led by Erin Ramsay, journalist and newsreader at Star FM, and attendees will hear from NOW Australia chair Liza-Jayne Loch, psychologist, media speaker and author Meredith Fuller, Audible senior HR manager Amanda Norris and Palin Communications associate director Karina Durham.

Subjects covered include the state of harassment in the media industry, the psychological impact for victims and insights into perpetrators, steps you can take with HR and your rights as an employee, and how to address harassment in an agency or other small business.

PRIA NSW Young Guns chair April Rose said: “This is an issue that is particularly close to my heart.

“When the group started speaking to media practitioners about the topic to gauge interest, we quickly found that many had a passionate story to tell.

“This is something that has, unfortunately, affected people at every level.

“We hope that by taking on such a challenging and significant topic we can help raise awareness and empower practitioners across the industry”.

“PRIA national president Sylvia Bell added: “PRIA is committed to offering meaningful support and development opportunities for all communications professionals.

“Events like the #MeToo and Mean Girls: Dealing with Workplace Harassment workshop are key to expanding our offering and talking to our members about the topics that matter to them deeply”.

The event takes place at Tank Stream Labs on Thursday 28 February 2019, from 6.30pm – 8pm.
