My Kitchen Rules continued its Sunday night dominance, once again claiming the most watched show of the evening – some 1.104 million viewers – according to overnight OzTam numbers.
Sadly, last night’s MKR was overshadowed by claims of racism after one of the contestants, who was about to judge the cuisine of the two Vietnamese mothers, Kim & Suong, said, “We’re definitely hoping there’s no domestic pets on the menu tonight”.
Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane immediately tweeted, “Disappointing to see a racist joke on prime time TV – this stuff is not acceptable. Let’s not give racism any encouragement or licence.” While other viewers slammed the “joke” as “disgusting”, “inappropriate” and “racist”.
However, it was better news for Ten’s new owners, CBS, after the network had one of its more impressive Sunday evenings thanks namely to the Big Bash final between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Adelaide Strikers.
The cricket finale pulling in 1.04 million viewers for Ten and making it the second most watched show last night. In comparison, the women’s final, that Ten aired prior to the men’s game, could only pull 235,000.
Ten’s other big show, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! did well, managing 882,000 and making it the fourth most watched show of the night.
Nine’s best was Married At First Sight that pulled 835,000 viewers.
All up, Seven won the night with 28.9 per cent audience share. Nine was second with 24.5 per cent, Ten managed 21.9 per cent, the ABC had 17.7 per cent and SBS pulled a neat seven.
Seven also managed the bragging rights in the 6pm news category, pulling 915,000 viewers to rival Nine’s 804,000.
For the ABC, its 7pm news bulletin was its best with 714,000. The Coronation had 680,000 and Shetland 620,000.
