Study: 75% Of People Prefer A “Dad Bod” To A More Toned Body Shape

A new study has found that people would far prefer to look at a “dad body” – that’s a bloke, often middle-aged, with a paunch and some belly fat – than toned a six-pack so often favoured by media and the advertising industry.

The online survey was done by UK singles site Dating.com and included some 2000 respondents.

Of those, some 75 per cent said they preferred a male physique that was softer and rounder over the chiselled and toned one that is typically seen on the cover of men’s fitness magazines.

According to the research, male users of Dating.com were increasingly proud of their “dad bods”, with 45 per cent admitting they used the #dadbod in their bios as a way of showing off their physique.

In contrast to the proud and paunchy, only 15 per cent of respondents said they preferred the “Barbie or Ken” look in their prospective partners.

However, 70 per cent of people surveyed admitted they had been hitting the gym to improve their appearance for the pending UK summer.

Maria Sullivan, dating expert and vice president of Dating.com, said the research proved that media, filmmakers and advertisers may have it wrong when it comes to the most appealing way to present men.

“Very fit and in shape bodies are seen as ideal when it comes to attracting a partner, however the users of Dating.com just proved that isn’t always the case when it comes to real-life romances,” Sullivan said.

“Movies and TV shows tend to promote Barbie and Ken body types, giving people the idea that they need to look similar in order to find their match.

“We’re happy to be able to confirm that is not how the real world actually operates. No matter your body type, your soul mate is out there and Dating.com is dedicated to helping you find them,” she said.
