Snapchat Releases Spectacles & Renames Holding Company

Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel has modelled the social media company’s first hardware product- Spectacles, Spiegel describes the unisex sunnies as a ‘toy’ for snapchatters to use for kicks.

Spectacles have a tiny camera on the frame which records up to 10 seconds of video from your first-person vantage. The glasses feature a fish-eye 115-degree angle lens, wider than a typical smartphone’s and much closer to the eyes’ natural field of view.

“We’re going to take a slow approach to rolling them out,” Spiegel said during the interview with Wall Street Journal, which included a photoshoot by the creative director of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld.

“It’s about us figuring out if it fits into people’s lives and seeing how they like it.”

Spiegel tested the glasses with his now-fiancee Miranda Kerr:

“It was our first vacation, and we went to Big Sur for a day or two. We were walking through the woods, stepping over logs, looking up at the beautiful trees. And when I got the footage back and watched it, I could see my own memory, through my own eyes—it was unbelievable.

“It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again.”

Snapchat is also changing its company name to Snap Inc. since it now has more than one product. However, the app will remain as Snapchat.
