He might be more famous for getting drunk at them, but Today host Karl Stefanovic has lashed those who are choosing to boycott the Logies that are coming up in 10 days’ time.
Yesterday, Stefanovic used an appearance on his breakfast program to call out his rivals at Sunrise who’ve apparently chosen to give the annual gong-fest a miss.
“What, they’re too good to support the local industry? To support their own network colleagues who have been lucky enough to be nominated for their hard work? Just plain too good,” Stefanovic stammered.
“Well, we don’t want you there, anyway. You’re all boring – except for Grant Denyer, I quite like him,” Stefanovic railed, despite apparently forgetting Denyer worked for Ten.
However, Sunrise’s Samantha Armytage was having none of Stefanovic’s barbs. Yesterday afternoon she tweeted: “I agree @karlstefanovic we are boring. So boring you can’t stop talking about us on your show.”
It’s probably all good-natured fun as Armytage and Stefanovic are good friends who regularly rib each others’ programs on social media and in public.
However, Stefanovic also used his Today show appearance yesterday to savage Aussie actor Hugo Weaving who’s also chosen not to attend this year’s Logies despite being nominated for Most Outstanding Actor for his performance in the ABC’s Seven Types of Ambiguity.
During the week, Weaving described the Logies as “a promotional tool for the TV channels themselves” and said he wouldn’t be attending.
But Stefanovic was having none of the no-show. “The Logies are recognition for the hard work of those who work in a great industry, an industry that entertains all Australians ,” he said.
“It survives and thrives on people like you promoting it, people’s jobs depend on it.
“So you aren’t coming to the Logies? No worries. You don’t want to thank a producer, a camera operator, or someone who paid for your show to be made, paid your wage, Hugo?”
For his part, Karl has not been nominated for a Logie this year, but is apparently still attending.
