Reverend Tim Costello Blasts The AFL’s Cryptocurrency Deal

Reverend Tim Costello has lashed out at the AFL for corrupting the sport through its cryptocurrency deal.

As reported on by The Guardian, Costello said the AFL has “immoral form” and is “corrupting and compromising the sport.”

Costello’s scathing criticism comes as the AFL announced the five-year, $25 million dollar partnership with Crypto.com on Tuesday.

The trading platform has already made deals with various international sporting brands and will also run an ad with Matt Damon at this year’s Super Bowl.

AFL chief executive, Gillon McLachlan, called the partnership, “an exciting new chapter for Australian Football.”

He continued by stating, “Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology is a dynamic and emerging industry and the AFL is delighted to partner with Crypto.com.”

However, Costello, who serves as the Alliance for Gambling Reform’s chief advocate, said, “The sport is meant to be a sport and all these add ons just because they say they need the money, chip away at the integrity of the sport.”

While Costello takes potshots at the AFL’s supposedly checkered advertising history, an argument can be made for the game being the most progressive league in Australia.

AFL’s leadership has made enormous diversity and inclusion policy commitments and delivered on them.

The AFL has also set the bar high for multicultural, indigenous and disability participation.

Naysayers like Costello have ragged on crypto platforms for various reasons and will likely continue to do so.

But, time and time again, cryptocurrency has demonstrated its ability to empower and act as a vehicle for social good.

The AFL’s partnership is an exciting step towards cryptocurrencies legitimisation in Australia.
