According to reports, Bruce lehrmann is considering suing Network 10 and Lisa Wilkinson for defamation.
The Daily Mail Australia has reported that Lehrmann is currently weighing up his options and considering launching legal action against the network and one of its biggest stars.
Lehrmann is taking aim at The Project‘s 2021 exclusive interview with Brittany Higgins, where she accused him of rape in a sit-down interview with Lisa Wilkinson. The Daily Mail Australia also alleged that the network failed to give Lehrmann a chance to comment before running the story.
A Network 10 spokesperson told B&T, “Network 10 has received no notice of any claim or proceedings. As is customary, a comment was sought but not provided.”
At the time of the interview, Lehrmann’s identity was not revealed. His identity only became public knowledge after he was charged with sexual assault. In the interview, he was only referred to as a “male colleague”.
News.com.au has reported that Lehrmann has been unemployed since 2021 and has allegedly been left with a $300,000 unpaid legal bill.
All charges against Lehrmann were dropped after the first trial was canned due to a rogue juror conducting research outside of the case, and a second trial was deemed too detrimental to Higgins’ mental health.
It is worth noting that Australia’s defamation laws are some of the toughest in the world. The growing trend seems to be that publications tend to have to pay up. Erin Molan recently won her case against The Daily Mail, Nine recently settled a defamation case with Clem Ford and Rebel Wilson famously won her case against Bauer Media.
