Queensland’s ‘Guns For Christmas’ Billboard Labelled “Abhorrent”

Struggling to buy that “special someone” a present this Christmas? Well, perhaps a handgun could be just the treat to surprise the picky on the 25th.

And now a billboard in Queensland advertising guns as Christmas presents has earned the wrath of the state’s top cop.

The huge billboard for Logan firearm store Gunworld features a handgun wrapped in Christmas wrapping alongside the slogan: “What’s under your tree this year?”

Situated on Loganlea Road at Meadowbrook in the south of Brisbane, the ad has been called out by Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart as inappropriate and should be removed.

“It’s abhorrent and should be taken down,” Stewart told ABC Radio Brisbane’s Craig Zonca and Rebecca Levingston.

“I would like to see the billboard taken down. I don’t think it’s necessary.

“People who use firearms for their sport or work know where to go to purchase guns and I don’t think we need that type of advertising.

“The message that sends to me and to most people in the community would be quite abhorrent and against everything that’s really good about Australia.

“I respect those who own guns and use guns for their hobby or sport, I understand that, but there is a balance and I think we have the balance pretty right [here in Australia].”

Although it’s not illegal to advertise guns in Australia, the social media reaction to the Gunworld ad was largely mixed. Some calling the negative press surrounding it an “overreaction” while others said, “We are not America”.

Gunworld has not commented on the negative press or calls for the ad to be removed.
