Queensland Government Shifts Print Advertising Online

Queensland’s state government will no longer have to publish listings in print newspapers under new laws being introduced to the state’s parliament this week.

As it stands, the government is required to list things such as new mining leases or amendments to a land use plan in local newspapers.

However, with news consumption and publication increasingly shifting to online, the government is set to update these laws to reflect this digitisation.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick said the changes will help the government save while still providing relevant information to the public.

“For some years now, the overwhelming majority of Queenslanders have sourced most of their information from online publications,” he said.

“Queenslanders should have the same access to information wherever they live, and many regional communities are no longer serviced by regular print publications.

“At a time when every taxpayer dollar counts, this change will allow savings to be made without compromising access to important information.”

The changes come after News Corp moved more than 20 of its Queensland publications to digital-only last year as part of a significant overhaul to the company’s publishing portfolio.
