After months of heated debate and intense rallying on both sides, the results of the Australian marriage equality postal survey have been released.
Drum roll please…
It was 61 per cent YES!
Congratulations everyone, it’s an incredibly good day to be an Aussie.
Giving the keynote address at a results reveal party in Sydney’s Prince Alfred Park, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce (middle of photo below) has asked Malcolm Turnbull to “get on and do it”.
Speaking at the event, Irish-born Joyce said, “I was so proud of Ireland when they were the first country to vote for marriage equality”.
Adding, “but today I’m proud of Australia its an amazing outcome.”
“We should be proud of this country.”
“We didn’t want to go through this.”
“We need this to be delivered fast.”
Qantas has been a staunch supporter of marriage equality for some time, decking out a plane in rainbow regalia for Mardi Gras and Joyce personally donating $1m to the ‘Yes’ campaign.
During his address, Joyce thanked everyone who had voted yes, as well as giving a shout out to his partner Shane.
“Big thank you to everybody behind the scene particularly my partner Shane.”
“Big round of applause for the supporters here.”
