Sports brand Nike has halted its sponsorship with tennis star Maria Sharapova after revelations she had tested positive for the drug meldonium during the Australian Open this year.
Per the BBC, a statement from Nike read: “We are saddened and surprised by the news about Maria Sharapova.
“We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues.”
Sharapova said she had tested positive for the drug which she had been taking for health issues since 2006. The announcement was made during a press conference in Los Angeles, saying she had made a “huge mistake”.
