News Corp Australia Announces Three Senior Executive Appointments

News Corp Australia’s chief operating officer Peter Tonagh today announced three senior executive appointments.

Current executive general manager – NSW Brett Clegg has been appointed to the newly created role of managing director – community publishing. Current general manager, strategic projects Simon Anderson will succeed Clegg as executive general manager – NSW. John Webster will return to News Corp Australia as general manager – Tasmania.

As managing director – community publishing Clegg will provide oversight to News Corp Australia’s community titles – NewsLocal (Sydney), Quest (Brisbane) and Leader (Melbourne), as well the company’s investment in Perth’s Community Newspaper Group.

Clegg will also be responsible for the continued rollout of digital marketing product NewsXtend, the development of digital and print initiatives across the community network, and the ongoing transformation of News’ community classified business and advertising call centres.

Clegg will report to Tonagh and will be a key member of the News Corp Australia executive team.

Tonagh said: “Brett’s appointment is clear recognition of the importance of the community titles to our business overall and will bring new focus and commitment to the development of their future direction.”

Simon Anderson

Simon Anderson will replace Mr Clegg as executive general manager – NSW, with responsibility for the commercial performance of The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph.

Anderson joined News Corp Australia in 2014 as general manager of strategic projects, assisting with the development and rollout of Business Daily and other key strategic initiatives. Prior to that he was COO of the Financial Review Group.

John Webster

John Webster returns to News Corp Australia in the role of general manager – Tasmania, with responsibility for the company’s publications across the state including Mercury, Saturday Mercury, Sunday Tasmanian, Tasmanian Country and The Gazette.

Webster departed News in 2013 after 35 years with the company, during which time he  held positions including chief sub-editor of the Melbourne Herald; sports editor of the Melbourne Sun News Pictorial; deputy editor of the Herald Sun; Herald and Weekly Times (HWT) editorial operations manager; general manager of Cumberland Newspapers (now NewsLocal) and national director ofThe Australian.

The appointments of Clegg and Anderson are effective immediately. Webster starts in his new role in mid-November.
