Netflix has announced that it will acquire game developer Spry Fox as it further expands its gaming service.
The Cozy Grove developer will become the sixth in-house games studio at the video streaming service as Netflix continues to grow out its mobile games offering.
Netflix’s gaming service allows subscribers to play a collection of Android and iOS titles for no extra charge. During its earnings call last month, Netflix said that it has 35 titles available for subscribers with a further 55 in development.
For Spry Fox, there will be no immediate changes. The developer will continue making games that are planned and in development. It also says that it will be able to collaborate with other teams within Netflix to improve its games.
Spry Fox’s existing games will remain downloadable and available in their current forms on their current platforms. Games in development, including Cozy Grove 2, and a larger, non-violent MMO, will still see the light of day.
“We’ve been at this for almost 13 years,” wrote Spry Fox in a blog post.
“It’s been exhilarating, humbling, endlessly interesting and often challenging. We’ve always known that above all else, we wanted our games to bring people happiness. But in other ways, it feels like we only recently figured out what “we want to be when we grow up.” What has become clear over the course of all of our adventures: We are a studio that builds original, world-class cozy games. Especially games that bring people together. And we are confident that Netflix is going to help us do that.
“Thank you to everyone – our fans, our partners, and especially every single one of our past and present team members – who helped us reach this milestone. We remain ever grateful.”
