Internet drinking craze 'neknomination' has been given a charitable bent but the twist to the popular social media game is yet to take hold Down Under.

Instead it appears #neknominate is on the rebound in Australia, according to a social analysis by WeAreSocial’s Brad Buzzard.

A previous analysis of #neknominate mentions across social media had shown the trend beginning to slow.

#NekNominate v #NekDonate in Australia:

The charitable take on the drinking game appears to have originated from South Africa where Brent Lindeque turned the trend on its head.

He received his neknomination but instead of filming himself skolling a beer he gives away a sandwich, a chocolate bar and a Coca-Cola away before challenging two friends to take part (see below).

His video has received more than 290,000 views on YouTube and the drinking neknoms have begun to give way to the more community-friendly take on the craze.

While most of the charitable neknominations still use the #neknomination hashtag a new hashtag, #NekDonate, has appeared.

NekDonate “barely registers” in Australia according to Buzzard, but the recent boost #neknominate has received locally could be due to Australians getting in on the new trend but still using the old hashtag.

There are just 170 #NekDonate mentions on social media so far (as of February 4) and Ireland is driving the trend, as the location cloud below indicates.

Ireland is also where Neknominate has been blamed for the deaths of two young men.

“The chart below shows that whilst #NekDonate is making a small dent globally, #NekNominate is only just taking off around the world,” Buzzard, senior analyst at WeAreSocial, said.

“Only two posters in Australia have mentioned #NekDonate, but their tweets are supportive of the idea.

“They share the same opinion on #NekDonate – that it is a innovative way to reverse what many believe to be a negative trend.”

A local Facebook page called ‘Nekdonate’ was sets up January 11 this year and has attracted 512 likes.
