MTV Australia has apparently forgotten that the internet is forever, during the 2016 Golden Globes ceremony the MTV Australia Twitter page asked for “English subtitles” during Latina actresses Eva Longoria and America Ferrera presentation. Understandably Twitter wasn’t impressed.
The actresses Longoria and Ferrera bit was:
“Thanks, Charo” Relive @AmericaFerrera & @EvaLongoria killing it at the #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/oz0QHtfo27

During their presentation, MTV Australia tweeted this:
The MTV account quickly removed the tweet after people accused it of casual racism. Twitter pointed out the actresses were making fun about their similar looks not their accents, a difference which the MTV account forgot.
Twitter’s response to the tweet:
ahh, @MTVAUSTRALIA with the #whiteprivilege tweet of the night! lol pic.twitter.com/2k4a4uXWFN — T. Fisher King (@T_FisherKing) January 11, 2016
The intern at @MTVAUSTRALIA who posted this offensive & racist tweet needs to be fired immediately. Truly disgusting pic.twitter.com/074xyudbqY — PopCulture News (@PopCultureShady) January 11, 2016

Remember friends: racist, rude jokes aren’t funny! You might be a generally unkind person if you think they are (@MTVAUSTRALIA). — Brianna Jiménez (@briannaejimenez) January 11, 2016
I swear we’re not all like this, despite particularly strong evidence to the contrary of late #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/YYxPKn8kHi — Tonile Wortley (@tonilehelena) January 11, 2016
@shanebazzi @ERN_Malleyscrub @MTVAUSTRALIA luckily the internet is a great thing where screengrabs can live forever. Unlike MTV employees. — Leon Downey (@ledow) January 11, 2016
Hey @MTVAUSTRALIA, you do know deleting a tweet and saying “we didn’t mean offense” isn’t really an apology right?! pic.twitter.com/Q5c35eZqE2 — Ebs (@Ebswearspink) January 11, 2016
@MTVAUSTRALIA@rickygervais Disgusting and in extremely poor taste. This “apology” does not sound the least bit sincere. Whoever wrote it — becky escobar (@biebersIatina) January 11, 2016
MTV Australia quickly removed the offending tweets and posted these two apologies:
We get it was a bad call. We’ll leave the humour to @rickygervais — MTV AUSTRALIA (@MTVAUSTRALIA) January 11, 2016
