Wednesday TV Wrap: Ashes Hits A High & Takes The Block’s & Utopia’s Audiences With It

The rain-marred first day of the fourth Ashes didn’t deter 624,000 viewers tuning into 9Gem for all the action.

According to OzTAM metro numbers, 457,000 hung around for the second session and 222,000 were still there at the end of the day’s play.

However, it proved a mixed blessing for Nine, as viewers deserted The Block for the cricket.

Its stalwart home reno show posted a so-so 750,000 last night, which was down a good 150,000 on typical numbers.

Likewise, viewers of ABC’s Utopia clearly deserted the comedy show for the Steve Smith show. It managed just 442,000 against last week’s debut of 711,000.

Nine easily won Wednesday with 33.8 per cent audience share (all channels). Seven had 24.9 per cent, 10 did 20.4 per cent, the ABC had 14.6 per cent and SBS pulled 6.3 per cent.

For 10, The Bachelor did 674,000, The Project had 497,000 and My Life Is Murder didn’t exactly kill it with 343,000.

Seven’s best was its 6pm news with 944,000, Home And Away enjoyed 610,000, The Chase pulled 550,000 and Celebrity Chase did 511,000.

The ABC’s evening ran this way: 7pm news (592,000), Hard Quiz (517,000), Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell (498,000) and 7.30 (461,000).

Over at the SBS, its best was 24 Hours In Emergency with 173,000.
