Twitter Partners With Australian Marriage Equality To Create ‘Yes’ Emoji

Twitter and Australian Marriage Equality have teamed up to launch a special emoji so that Aussies can remind each other to #PostYourYes, as well as share messages of love, hope, and equality on Twitter.

The emoji will appear on any tweets using the hashtags #EqualityCampaign, #MarriageEquality, #VoteYes, #PostYourYes, #PostYes and #YesForEquality.

Here’s the statement from Twitter:

Since 1 August, marriage equality has been the most-discussed political issue on Twitter in Australia.

Twitter has been a vital platform to facilitate Australians having millions of conversations about marriage equality during the postal survey. Through Twitter, people have shared stories of hope for an Australia that truly celebrates fairness and equality for all.

For so many who have poured themselves into campaigning, the platform has been a place to unite as a community and offer the messages of hope, positivity, and fairness that characterise our campaign.

Twitter has also been an important network to share information and ask questions, like how Aussies overseas can post their vote and what date you need to post your survey by if you want to be certain it will reach the ABS in time (that’s Friday 27 October).

Crucially, it’s helped connect a community of Australians that all want the same thing – equality.

If you take a look at the tweets with people sharing pictures posting their ‘yes’, what you’ll see is an inspiring display of our country’s diversity. There are politicians, celebrities, Australians from rural communities, Australians living overseas, an astounding range of ages, and a pretty impressive splash of creativity. There is no one face of equality.

In these final weeks, it’s more important than ever to remind our friends and communities to post their ‘yes’ vote. Complacency is one of the biggest threats to the campaign. Everyone’s say counts. Everyone’s ‘yes’ vote matters. So, get out there and have a conversation – tweet at your mates who might not have made it to a post box yet, ask your family if they’ve voted.

Continue to share your stories that move, inspire, and challenge your community. Let’s get it done.
