The Australian Financial Review hosted an exclusive advertiser event in Sydney last week with special guest Oliver Stone, the director of Academy Award-winning films Midnight Express, Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July.

Stone was interviewed by AFR Weekend editor Matt Drummond about his career, his interest in the world of high finance, techniques of storytelling, and truth and fiction in films about historical events.

When asked about the one piece of knowledge he would pass on to others, Stone said: “I should have held my tongue a few times. I mean that in a sincere way of regret. I pissed off people by opening my mouth… Numerous times I made unnecessary enemies of studio people or actors by saying something. Because that was my style.”

The premise of this question will form a trade marketing campaign, the aim of which is to encourage and educate by sharing knowledge forward.

The event was attended by senior media and marketing leaders and influencers, as well as The Australian Financial Review editor-in-chief Michael Stutchbury and other senior members of the Financial Review editorial and commercial team.

“Oliver Stone is one of the world’s most original filmmakers, and one of the few who has dramatised the world of high finance through his classic 1987 film Wall Street and its post-GFC sequel Money Never Sleeps,” Drummond said.

“This is the world of The Australian Financial Review, and it was fascinating to hear how Mr Stone, from a different perspective and the medium of film, looks to uncover the same drama, the same intrigue and the same types of big personalities that we love to write about.”
