Sunday TV Wrap: It’s Sweet Music To Nine’s Ears As The Voice Finale Rules

If there’s one thing Aussie viewers love more than a reality TV show it has to be a reality TV show grand final, with Nine’s The Voice finale last night landing 1.31 million viewers according to OzTam viewer numbers.

The two-hour special, which saw Judah Kelly crowned the winner, had 1.18 million viewers for the bulk of the show, peaking at the announcement of the winner.

However, it’s been a steady decline for The Voice over the past five years. Go back to 2012 and some 2.7 million watched the finale’s prelims, rising to a whopping 3.2 million for the winner announcement.

Still, last night’s episode gave Nine a resounding win, the network taking off with 35.1 per cent of the evening’s audience share. Seven was second with 26.7 per cent, Ten had 17.2 per cent, the ABC 13.5 per cent and SBS with 7.5 per cent.

The other reality shows last night didn’t appear greatly affected by The Voice, with Seven’s House Rules sneaking over the million-mark. While Ten’s MasterChef – which headed to Japan for the episode – managed 780,000 and was up from the previous Sunday.

Seven’s 6pm news (1.29 million) beat Nine’s news (1.22 million). However, the fortunes where reversed in the current affairs genre, with Nine’s 60 Minutes (which followed The Voice) managing 786,000 versus Seven’s Sunday Night which could only muster 634,000.

Over at the ABC, its 7pm news continued to do well with 726,000, while the finale of Doctor Who pulled 461,000.

For the SBS, Treasures Decoded was the pick of the night with 217,000. While 200,000 people tuned in for its second-day coverage of the Tour de France.
