State Of Origin Figures Down On First Match As QLD Soars To Victory

Unless you live under a rock, you’d be well aware that the second of three State of Origin matches was held last night at Suncorp Stadium, and while ratings actually dropped compared to Round One, they still came in at a solid 2,373,000 viewers in five metro cities according to preliminary OzTAM figures.

The game saw Queensland seal the deal on yet another win against NSW, coming in with a final score of 26-16.

Nine’s first live broadcast nabbed 2,708,000 viewers nationally, according to OzTAM preliminary figures, confirming the Origin series as Australia’s most watched and profitable free-to-air event.

Similar to the first game of the series, there was questioning of the referees integrity from the NSW camp, with commentator and NSW City coach Brad Fittler hinting at a severe bias.

According to OzTAM, 1.36 million viewers tuned into the pre-match broadcast and some 1.31 million hung about for the post-match, excluding Perth figures who caught the pre and post-match broadcast on Gem.

The likes of MasterChef and the nightly news were no match for the Origin game, pulling less than half the figures of the Origin, MasterChef falling to just 927,000.

Evidently, Nine came out on top in terms of viewership last night, smashing free-to-air rival networks with a 44.5 per cent share. With regional figures of around 1.143 million, according to Nine reports, the figures for the match still swelled well over the three million mark overall.

The two sides will meet again in Sydney on July 13 for the third and final match, with the Maroons hot favourites to complete a clean sweep.
