Warburton Wields The Axe! Seven’s ‘Sunday Night’ First To Go Amid Rumours Of A Boardroom Shakeout

Seven has axed its Sunday Night current affairs program, according to reports in The Australian.

Reports state Sunday Night staff were hauled into the offices this morning and told the show was no more.

The current affairs program, which goes head-to-head with Nine’s longstanding 60 Minutes, had struggled in the competitive Sunday evening slot.

Seven’s news and current affairs boss Craig McPherson is reported to be holding meetings with staff to see if they can be redeployed in the network.

It comes as Seven West Media continues a significant restructure of its executive team under new CEO James Warburton.

B&T reported earlier today that company head of corporate affairs Stephen Browning had quit his role and will be moving to Melbourne to commence a similar position outside of the media.

The Australian is also reporting Warburton has axed more than half of his direct reports and is now looking to hire a chief content officer, head of marketing and chief digital officer.

In a letter to staff, obtained by The Australian, Warburton said the focus is now on “content led growth”.

“Since starting I have been focused on streamlining the organisation to create a flatter structure, with content at its heart, where digital growth is maximised, duplication of roles is removed and we create agile teams with operating efficiency,” he said.

“In order to build for the future and make these structural changes, we have had to make some tough decisions.

“Sadly some of our people will be leaving the company today, where there has been a duplication of roles across regions or we are creating simpler flatter structures.”
